On Monday the 21st January, we went to the Victoria and Albert Museum to look at the video game exhibit. I was very excited for this visit because video games is a hobby and a passion of mine and something I will hopefully be involved with in the future.
I very much took interest in the concept art aspects of video games because it is something I would like to make a career of. I found it fascinating and inspirational looking at the concept art of multiple games (Journey, No mans Sky and The Last of Us). They go to show against the old stereotype that games are a waste of time, that they are for kids or boys and display the works of art that they are. They are another form of art and expression which I felt proud to indulge in.
Another Exhibit I was interested in was the huge screen which displayed different types of games which ranged from competitive, fan art and construction. The games in question were League of Legends, Overwatch and Minecraft. I have played all of these games and have participated in the online community and it just felt so good to see that they are getting a lot of attention in the design world as I never thought they would become so popular outside of the gaming community. The League of Legends section I found especially touching because it showed the 2017 world championships. I have been watching the world Championships for this game since 2011 and it felt great to be part of something so big. To my peers it seemed like a strange premise to have such high production value for a video game.
Next I really liked reading about the more artistic and experimental aspects of video games, a lot of designers seem to be taking notice of the importance of games an their potential as another outlet of design and it is encouraging to see that video games can be considered great works of art and statements in their own right.
