Creative Conscience: NHS Staffing Crisis – Research 4

What I see:

  • two outlines of hands
  • one is full of blood and the other is being filled? (assumed)
  • blood drop in the middle between them
  • blue background

What makes me think that:

  • this hand pose is iconic from the famous painting which depicts God and Adam
  • the red colour symbolises blood
  • the drop of blood in the middle connotes a manner of exchange which communicates to audiences to donate blood

What more can I find:

  • the limpness of the hand at the bottom identifies it as the receiver of the blood
  • the pointed finger gesture designates that it is the one providing

What I see:

  • book with a stethoscope
  • the cord part is in the shape of a heartbeat

What makes me think that:

  • the heartbeat shape symbolises life
  • the stethoscope is symbolic of medical practitioners
  • the white stethoscope against the background emphasises the notion of doctors/nurses

What more can I find:

  • stethoscope position to be viewed in a birds eye position to make it more clearer for audiences to see

What I see:

  • a logo in the shape of a heart and a cross
  • the heart and the cross interweave
  • uses a pale colour for the line art

What makes me think that:

  • the heart and cross shape are symbolic of care
  • the heart is usually a symbol of love
  • the interwoven nature of the symbol emphasises the health aspect of the message
  • the colour used is commonly associated with the colour of scrubs those in the medical field wear on duty

What more can I find:

  • there is a hint of negative space where the heart and cross join or it could be just the tail or start end of the line art

Project X Group 2: Development

In the second Week of project X we had a few visitors from West Kent mind to talk to us and educate all of us about our designated mental health issues and we gained a lot of insight about ours through these visits.

Unfortunately, one of our group could not make it during this process so it was up to the two of us to carry on developing our ideas.

We took into account of our previous idea for an application and after a lot of discussion and brainstorming we decided that an application was for one, not a very good idea because we discovered that a lot of groups already had that idea and we wanted to make something different that played to our strengths.

We were discussing about other ways to effectively lessen Anxiety and Depression when the subject of food came up. This led to one of us asking if the other knew what ‘Blue Apron’ was (it is a food delivery service where the ingredients are delivered to your door and you would have to cook it yourself) and we thought that it would be a good idea for a few reasons.

  • one of the causes for anxiety and depression is poor nutrition, our hypothetical idea would only include highly nutritious ingredients that are proven to increased well being.
  • Cooking could be seen as another task which would cause more anxiety in others but our idea would require only to be placed in a pot or a pan and cooked for a certain amount of time since ease of use is the most important thing.
  • it would hopefully encourage a healthy life skill in cooking.
  • we realised it would be expensive but we discusses with a member of West Kent mind that it is common for a lot of companies actually sponsor charities so that they may make these types of things possible.

We then decided to go ahead with this idea as it felt like something different to what everyone else was doing so we then went ahead and started designing ideas for the service starting with the logo. The service would be called ‘Green Palette’ as both a nod to ‘Blue Apron’ and a play on words with the palette of the tongue and a delivery palette.

Design context and analysis: Discuss the representation of either gender or race in historical and or contemporary graphic design

Research is important and different sources are good to write a good essay. The more research I have the more the essay will write itself

Slides during the Lecture:

Claude Levi Strauss

Turn of the 20th century – famous anthropologist (study of people)

Was also interested in culture and writing

Use to spend time with tribal peoples in places like South America

Tribal people live in indigenous lifestyles

Strauss found that in other cultures there were stories and myths (deep myths) that the people believed in

Akin to christianity or islam – people thought they were real

Also called deep structure – we tell ourselves stories of what things mean

Myths – ideological

All myths are bound up in pairs of binary opposites, pairs of good and bad

Youth against old age, beauty against ugliness, life and death, hunger and plenty, day and night

All societies are made up of these binary opposite myths

As society becomes ‘sophisticated’ so do their myths – not just about life and death

Indigenous lifestyle is better for the planet, our society is not

What is considered positive helps people stay in power

Not individual people it is the structure of society

People ruling the earth (100 companies) exploit the ones who try to change for the better

Binary opposites can change within our society

The way we look at race gender disability are binary opposites

People like familiarity because it is comfortable but it is also bad for creativity

Example of Snow White Binary opposites

A lot of binary opposites  – society is built around these ideologies

‘Good violence and bad violence’ – binary opposites change depending on context

No such thing s normal – there is only the current state – what society agrees to say is normal

Ugly is positioned as something negative in society

Binary opposites of fairy stories we know

Rich poor

Ugliness and beauty

Protector perpetrator

Staying off the path represented danger – its about telling women to stay on the path of innocence

Nothing is true

Its just what we agree to tell ourselves

Terrorist and a freedom fighter is exactly the same thing

These stories are told by the media and politicians in order to us to be part of the story

Everyone agrees that this is normal

Modern Ideology is wilfully ignoring the binary opposites and agreeing not to look differently CRITICAL THINKING

Don’t just go along with everything

Binary Opposites Comparison Activity Snow White vs Wonderbra

What can you not see that is part of binary opposites:

Men

Children

An ugly woman

nude is not natural or decorate

Dressed and undressed

Girly

Men – have been seen as they should be as active people logical people who can make things who can solve a problem navigators and still seen that way in their pay

Women – instinctive, hysterical, sensitive, which is why they are considered to be temperamental

Logic vs intuitive – the world needs both not one or the other

These traits in men and women are emphasised to keep society how it is

Its problem that people think society is okay when it is not

The male gaze – the birth of Venus

Women in art galleries in the past would have to be chaperoned

Man takes the place of the artist

Active man is looking at the passive women in the painting

men painted what they saw

Men painted for men on how they saw women

The women looking at the art looks at the women passively – ‘am I that woman?’

Male gaze – taking power through looking

Entitled to your opinion but you cannot justify making up your own facts

These are my annotated notes for a session I had in class about The history of Graphic Design and Technology. I learned a lot of things which made me feel a bit doom and gloom for the future due to the greed and hubris of humans. We think we can just take from this planet and it seems that the majority of us remain ignorant or feel like it does not matter to them.

It was uplifting to know there were people in he past who stood up to this and I hope to grown into a person who uses his skills for the benefit of future generations.
