Placebook 8

One of my favourite sketches, I made a connection with the exposed trunk and branches with negative connotations which is a shame because these once beautiful trees which were once so full of colour and life have been reduced to a shadow of its former self.

I get a very sinister feeling whilst sketching this because the atmosphere was very inhospitable. It was cold and foggy, I was uncomfortable and the wind was harsh so I did not stay long.

The branches seem to grasp out and it is no wonder that in the past, people would mistake the silhouettes of these trees for monsters. A very clear juxtaposition from autumn.

I found that the transition to winter was a bit depressing. I viewed it in a way of the trees losing their leafs was akin to entering old age and starting to wrinkle and eventually die. I made a connection with the trees because I realised that they in some way reflect humanity in a way that they are born, enter their prime, start to grow old and then die. But they are seemingly infinite because they will repeat this process year after year.

Again, the black and white sketches reflect the absence of  joy during the transition to winter, as we enter the twilight of the year.

Here is a depiction of a man made structure at the official entrance of the park. It is obviously man made because although it looks coincidental, the rock is very out of place with any other rock shape in the park, also the plaque embedded into the rock is a memorial which are man made.

Another attempt at using brown colours was made. as the last signs of autumn fade into winter. I think these images came out better because I was more patient with them and the drawings where less ambitious, safe and I managed to apply softer touches.

I see this as me becoming more in tuned to the place in the sense that I am taking care of representations of my place.

Here are a few more incomplete drawings of the autumn trees which I find one of the best in the placebook. I found that my style of drawing really shys away from the colours because they did not produce the results I liked. In a way this could reflect of me as a person and my connection with my place in that I may see it in black a white? Am I actually attached to this place?

Another attempt at using colour during autumn and another one I was not pleased with as I just cannot get the colour combinations right. Perhaps I need a closer more serious look at my place.

Deeper into autumn now and transitioning into winter. most of the leafs have fallen from the trees but there are some that remain.

I really liked the warm reds and brown colour of the leaves as I do not normally associate nature with having these colour combinations. It really made me appreciate what taking closer more focused looks into nature could achieve and I understood why people would want to just sit on a bench in the park and just observe. It is very peaceful.

Some more attempts at trees. By this time, I have been able to use some techniques in order to make the leafs look better. On the right page there is a idea for a final piece inspired by all the trees i’ve been drawing.

It involves a canvas with leaves painted onto it which will be mounted on a tree branch growing out of a plant pot. There are strings which will hang down from the top of the canvas which will have leafs to reflect the different seasons.

I think this is where my placebook really starts to get a little more colourful as I further add some colours to the autumn trees I sketch and add in some plant life.

At this point, I am very bad at drawing the leafs of the trees as I did not know any techniques in order to improve them so I just scribbled them in.

I took some small plants to see how they would look being stuck into the book and although at the time I thought it worked pretty well, I considered the ethical repercussions of doing this.

There is a popular notion that if you like a plant you pick it but if you love it you let it grow and that really resonated with me when I stuck them into this book. I really like how deep that concept was and so I decided not to continue with that kind of content for the placebook.

This is a photo of a small garden in the park which is decorated  with very colourful flowers. In the centre of it was a man made sundial which has been destroyed. I really like the contrast but appropriate aesthetic of the sundial and the natural surroundings. Though they are different they seem to belong together.

This time I decided to try my hand at describing my feelings and the phenomenology I experienced. I am quite new to this and it felt exposing because it was like audiences would be able to peer into my mind which to me was a very invasive sensation so I was a little hesitant to write down my inner thoughts.

I also tried to design a geometric autumn leaf so that the pages were not completely devoid of colour and this was my first time experimenting with colour before fully committing to it which I knew I would eventually have to do.

A photo I took of a sunset in autumn along with my sister. I like the way the warm colours wash the background and trees with browns and oranges. These along with the clear sky juxtaposed with the coat my sister is wearing contrast nicely.

These are my first drawings and experiences at Calverly Park located in Tunbridge Wells.

I came unprepared and thus was only able to draw with the limited supplies I had which were my pen and my Placebook. It was very cold this day so I thought the black scratchy style which was the result of my limited supplies were quite fortunate.

I think the lack of colour and sketchyness reflects the detachment I had with the place since I wasnot intimately familiar with it yet and did not make any connections with it  so the black and white point of view seemed appropriate.
