Some more ideas I had with the chameleon notion. Again, I tried to incorporate everything in my research that I liked so far – the circles, the housing aspect, the approachable reptile and the negative space.

Although I thought these would have been really good designs, in the end I decided to turn away from them because I learned my lesson about falling in love with my designs and trying to force them from last year.

Some more concepts I have been having. I tried to play with the word ‘Reptile’ and tried to make it look like a reptile but I was not happy with it and it felt like a cheap way out so to speak. Plus I had to think about the rest of the logo that they wanted to be included.

I started to stray away from the idea of using a chameleon because although they are cute and more approachable than iguanas in my opinion, I wanted the logo to have the mascot Bruce in it.

Having said that, I had some ideas to play around the tortoise and combine it with the house replacing its shell. I found that tortoises are also seen as approachable because they are not perceived as dangerous and mainly eat vegetables and plants.

Here are some of my designs for the logo. These sketches are done in order to get my creative process flowing. Again, there is a abundance of circular smooth shapes in order to be more pleasing to the eye of the audience.

As you can see, there is also an abundance of green which is only for reference and will not be the only colour I will be using.

The second set of images of my concept sketches focus more on trying to incorporate negative space and to focus more on the charity aspect of the organisation. There are a few hand images there as I just wanted to see what ideas I could come up with and if it could prompt any more ideas.

Reptile Project 5

I thought of the nation centre for reptile welfare as more of a charity and organisation dedicated to rescuing and rehousing reptiles.

So I decided to focus on researching more animal charity logos and other general charities to see what they were like.

No angular shapes to be found and a lot of smooth lines, again supporting the idea to use circles in my designs. They also use pale colours which is pleasing to the eye as it does not distract or take away from the design.

I really like the use of hands in the charity logos but upon discussing these with Sancha, I was told that the use of hands could suggest to others that the reptiles are being handled which is not exactly what the animal is about, it is about care. It brought to light a negative connotation that I did not think of.

I am really liking the use of negative space on some of these logos. It is so clever to incorporate a shape within another but it is also so simple. I like the idea of simple but effective and I think I will definitely develop this. I remember reading up about negative space and how effective it can be but I also enjoy the subtlety.

Reptile Project 4

Looking at the original logo which is not bad, there are a few images of logos and icon which I came across during my research which I took a liking to and hope to draw some inspirations from.

Sticking with the circular shape of the original I found some chameleon logos which where also circular which makes it appear to me that circles are very associated with the animal.

I find that the shape of a circle is more friendly looking as it implies gentleness as opposed to the sharpness of say triangles or squares. Circles could also be used for encompassing another image and allows the designer to draw audiences attention to other points of interest within a logo.

Reptile Project 3

After researching on iguanas and chameleons, I stared to looking into various other reptiles.

I reckon using a snake would be a good idea since they have a potential to be designed into many shapes and are relatively simple to draw. Although they do not have spines or claws like the iguana or other reptiles, they are historically regarded as symbols of evil – alluding to the metaphor or satan in the garden of eden or in pop culture such as the slytherine house in the Harry Potter series. Because of this, I do not think they would be particularly good candidates for a logo which aims to appeal to the public and audiences with fears of snakes as well.

I also looked at other lizards like geckos. However, when the word reptile is mentions ones mind may not initially jump to gecko. I found that through asking multiple peers that iguanas are more likely to come up within ones mind first. Also I want to focus on using the iguana for that is to be the mascot of the organisation.

Next, I looked at tortoises. These seem like friendly and cute reptiles which is reflected in their calm exterior. They carry their home essentially on their back which can have a lot of potential if i think about the ‘welfare’ aspect of the organisation. Personally tortoises are my favourite reptile so I could possibly design a logo using them if all does not go to plan.

Reptile Project 2

I turn my attention to studying other species of reptile and specifically would like to focus more on the iguana since the “mascot” for the organisation will be Bruce the Green Iguana. Looking at how these creatures pose and what their environments are like will be important to my research as I want it to be accurate and reflective of the organisation whilst also involving their mascot.

From these images from my research, I can see that a key feature of the iguana is its spines and its loose skin that appears to be dangling from their necks. These are commonly found in males.

Their general skin/scales are usually a green hue and considering that Bruce is a GREEN iguana, it would make sense to base a colour scheme around the colour green. I must keep in mind that green does not have to be the only colour and mixing and matching from time to time will be good for my development.

Another key thing with these creatures is the way they look up. This could be useful in justifying their friendly playful nature to audiences and potential adopters even though reptiles do not naturally liked being handled.

Also the rock is very common in images of iguanas usually alluding to their natural habitats of high temperatures due to them being cold blooded animals.

Reptile Project 1

I began my research by studying different types of reptiles. I looked into Chameleons at first as it is the animal depicted on the current logo. This will serve as my initial starting point and is also a good point of reference to go on.

The logo itself is not terrible but it has its flaws. It looks like it was not designed by anyone with a design background and also looks like a clip art image from microsoft word.

My aim for this logo will be to design something that is clever and also manages to reflect the organisations mission to rescue and rehouse reptiles.

Greetings Card

My first conceptual idea for the greetings card. I had an idea to incorporate both Ashford and West Kent college within the design with geometric shapes representing bot the letter A and W respectively. The lines which they are made up of represent diversity and unity within the Hadlow group and intersect to represent helping their respective communities.

I aim to use a hand rendered type face in order to keep within the conventions of traditional greetings card which display the same style of type.

My next iteration of the card involved many circles in order to represent the unity and diversity of the respective colleges with their appropriate colour schemes. I have also done an inverse position of the text colour to help it stand out more and to further emphasise the unity of the hadlow group.

Some modifications to the type for a more traditional hand rendered style. I have also added a circle to frame the text in the centre to make the type stand out more and to signify the community with the circles spill into to connote the help the hadlow group work towards.

Final rendition of the greetings card.

I made the shape more festive and chose a blue corporate colour in order to align more with the brief. I made the type red in order to stand out amongst the blue and added a gradient in the middle of the card to add a glow effect originating from the centre of the page. I also added a white border to frame the piece and decided to put the layers containing the circles in from to give a popping effect in order to draw attention from the audience.
